O'Neil tried out for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. She made it to the 100th round because the judges were thrilled by her vocal performances. O'Neil received high praise by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. The judges were shocked, and they suggested that people decide for Melissa as the contestant with the best ability to sing. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil beat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
